Middle Fell - Seatallan - Buckbarrow
1st June 2007

Today's walk was originally going to be one long one - Middle fell up to Haycock - across to Caw and down to Seatallen - Buckbarrow. However the forcast was not that good, and because I had uploaded 4 different walks into my GPS I plumped for what I thought would be an easier one. Hard Knott, and then we would walk up to Harter fell and then down and across to Green Crag. You can read all about it here, but lets just say we got done a little early, and so we drove around to Wasdale. That's when I decided to have a walk up Middle fell and see how far I got.. I hadn't really expected to do the full circle.

Middle Fell, taken from the 'landing stage' on the map were the road to Wasdale Head meets the road to Greendale.

On the ascent of Middle fell looking down on Greendale... when I walked back past this along the road
I noticed there was a house for sale....

I'm almsot sure it's the one nearest to the camera on the right..
you just need nine hundred and sixty thousand quid if you want to buy it!!

Greendale Gill

Now by this time I have to say that I was really, really feeling tired. Having driven all the way over to
Wasdale it was good that the family were having a good time by the lake, but the thought crossed my mind..
'what if I don't have the energy to get up here... ' and that's when I missed the path off to the right that leads
to the summit of Middle fell.. arghhhh

You will see by pictures that follow where I was when I took this, it's not where I should have been..
but still.. I enjoyed being off the track.. it lets you see things you wouldn't normally. The fell to the left is Seatallan,
and it gets a lot steeper than you can see by this pic.

Greendale Gill to the right - my ascent route.. with Buckbarrow beyond

Still from the same place, having missed the path I now had to climb to the summit of Middle Fell.

Almost there, looking across to Whin Rigg

Can't remember that this lot are called..........

The higher ground to the right is Cat Beild, to the left Buckbarrow

Had I not been pushed for time, I would have stayed here for much longer.. Middle Fells summit,
Jay looking rather shattered. Now it was here that I ate half a bar of Crofters chocolate flapjack, and drank half a bottle of Lucozade.
I'm not one for name dropping normally, but I plan to start a thread on OM about this because climbing to the summit
of here took just about everything out of me. I really was out of it, and not wanting to go back the same way I came, I started off down towards the base of Seatallan - I would see how I felt once I got there I thought..
once I got there I fairly zoomed up the almost vertical slopes of Seatallan.. it was like I had new legs!

Couldn't decide which one of these pics I liked the best... still Middle Fell

Yewbarrow behind the cairn

Down onto Wast water and them fells again...

Taken from my ascent of Seatallan.. Greendale Tarn.. VERY boggy area..

I meant to take a pic of the steep slopes I told you about.. but I zoomed up that quick I forgot.. he he he..
Seatallan's summit, possible my new favourite place in the lakes.... Again I could have sat down here for hours.

It's like being on a footy pitch

From the summit across to Caw

.. and Haycock

From near the shelter this is looking down to what is the start of the River Bleng

quite like this one...

The shelter not needed today, hardly a breath of wind.. baking hot.

Off down the hill to Cat Beild, looking back to Seatallan

and again

Over to Middle Fell

From Cat Beild, looking down to Buckbarrow

Jay really was shattered by this time.. I believe this is Glade How summit cairn.
From here you can't see Wast Water at all.. you have to drop down to the three or four tops of Buckbarrow below this one...
No map actually shows you the summit of Buckbarrow, so I went and stood on them all.

and WHAT a view!! Greendale a very long way down.. and the landing stage center pic.

our car only one left.. every else has gone... it's there.. honest.. need better camera!

The peek that I took the picture above this one from... we'll call this peek A

Whin Rigg

Like I said, three or for tops.. this is peek B, looking west to peek C. If you look on an OS map, I use multi map,
peeks A & B are near the letter O of Buckbarrow, and the peek above is near the letter A. I know because I
have the track of where I walked and so I can tell. It is worth walking along and standing on them all..

From C looking back to B, with Middle Fell behind to the right, and Seatallan off to the left.

Same thing, just looking down a bit.

My decent route.. hard on the knees..

From the road looking up to Buckbarrow

Again from the road, Middle Fell.
This walk took me about four hours, and I was going very slow at the beginning. If you haven't been up here you should...
Middle Fell has amazing veiws of the Head of Wasdale,
Seatallan is just the weirdest footy pitch I have ever stood on..
and Buckbarrow will take your breath away..

Please do email us if you have any comments. Chris
