18.91 miles - 6,253ft of ascent
TWELVE Wainwrights in one walk!
St.
Peter's Church (Martindale) - Bonscale Pike - Arthurs Pike - Loadpot Hill
- Wether Hill
Redcrag Tarn - Raven Howe - High Raise, (Martindale) - Rampsgill Head - Rest
Dodd - The Nab
Satura Crag - Brock Crags - Angle Tarn (Patterdale) - Angletarn Pikes - Place
Fell -
Beda Fell - St. Peter's Church (Martindale)
I had been
looking at my remaining Far Eastern Fells and trying to figure out
a way of doing as many of them at one time as possible. I finally came up
with a
route that I believed I might be able to complete. As it turned out I ran
out of steam right
at the end and will have to make a return trip to do Steel Knotts and Hallin
Fell, but
although last night I was very disappointed at not doing these two fairly
small fells,
looking back, almost 19 miles and 6,259ft asc aint too bad...

1)
Bonscale Pike |

Follow the track behind St Peter's Church and you are at the bottom of Steel
Knotts.
Very soon you get a glimpse of Ullswater and of Bonscale and Arthur's Pike's

Foreground, Steel Knotts, then Bonscale, then Arthurs

Having taken the foot bridge at Fusedale Beck you start to climb Bonscale Pike.

Hallin Fell from the side of Bonscale

One of
the many cairns on Bonscale Fells top.
Looking down on Ullswater.

And again

Arthurs Pike huge cairn.

Same thing from further back.
The walk
from here to Loadpot hill is really not worth showing any pics,
it's all fairly flat and dull.
My friend David Hall says this king of terrain is his favourite, I can't really
understand this myself,
but it just goes to show we all do this walking lark for different reasons.
Loadpot Hill Summit
Wether Hill Summit
Looking up the fence towards
High Raise
Red Crag Tarn looking towards
High Raise.

From High Raise looking
towards Rampsgill Head
And from Rampsgill this is Rest Dodd. Look to the right hand third of the
picture,
you will see a wall going straight down the side of the fell.. remember this
wall!

From Rampsgill
looking towards The Knott. I had already decided that
because I did this hill last week I would miss this one out today.

Looking back towards Martindale, The Nab to the left,
Steel Knotts center, and Bonscale far right in the distance.

By the time I had walked down the path from the side of The Knott,
Rest Dodd started to look a lot bigger than it had when I was on top of Rampsgill
Head.

As I got to the summit of Rest Dodd I got my first view of Brothers Water
and
Hartsop Above How. Hart Crag, and Fairfield totally lost in the clouds.

Approaching to summit of Rest Dodd.

From Rest Dodd's summit the view back to The Knott.

The summit looking towards The Nab.

Rampsgill Head from Rest Dodd

From Rest Dodd's summit I could see Brock Crag and Angle Tarn, but first
a not so quick dash in and out of The Nab.

The decent off Rest Dodd is very steep in places and the thought of
having to regain this height again was not thrilling me, I have to tell you.
Now.. why did I say, 'in and out of The Nab' well, because for those that
don't know,
It's a Deer Forrest... and remember that wall..you can just see it where
the path seems to disappear in the picture.... well when you get there, you
get this.

I've deliberatly kept this big for you to be able to read.

From the wall....
and remember I said that wall went down the side of the fell... well..
However
steep this looks, I have to tell you my legs where hurting some what by this
time
and there is a style to climb here (where the notice is),
and it's not the place to catch ones foot and trip, believe me

When I got to The Nab's summit there was this really nice bloke sat there
having a drink.
We got chatting as you do and I started walking back towards Rest Dodd, forgetting
to take a picture of the summit.. GRRRR.. You can see the wall running across
Rest Dodd,
you have to follow the path back to the style along The Nab, or at least
the sign said you did..
I did as it said and then followed the wall to the right which took me towards
Brock Crags.

Once I had climber back
up along the side of Rest Dodd I finally got another view of Satura Crag
and behind that Angle Tarn.

From my walk to Brock Crag I got a view of Hayeswater and Gray Crag to the
right.

Angle Tarn from the walk
to Brock Crags

Approaching Brock Crags
summit.

.. and a little closer...

Taken with my Nikon mobile
phone, Brock Crags summit.

To the left Gray Crag,
to the right Stoney Cove Pike, leading down to Hartsop Dodd.
Brothers Water, with Hartsop
Above How

Angle Tarn, a place I didn't have time to investigate properly.
There are so many little summits around this place it's mind boggling,
and I will have to go back some time to get some better pictures.

One more..

From Angletarn Pikes Summit, Bothers Water and one or two fells...
Click the picture if you want yet another shot of
H.A.H. from a slightly different angle

At this point I felt Place Fell was one hill too many. I had very little strength
left to be honest,
and I knew I still had a long walk back to the car over Beda Fell.
It took me some time to decide that coming back to do Steel Knotts and Hallin
fell
was a much better option than having to come back to do Place Fell.
So.. head down and grit your teeth time.

From the side of Place Fell, Patterdale and Glenridding and the end of Ullswater.
The fell behing the trees center is Birkhouse Moor, leading onto Stridng edge...
you can see Catstycam sticking up just right of center.

The southern summit of Place Fell.. ohhh how I wished this was the main one..

great view when you do get there...

But this is the real summit of Place Fell..

And this is the view back
down to the southern one.

the decent route off Place
Fell
Once I had dropped off
Place Fell I started off up Beda Fell.

The side of Place Fell from the climb up Beda Fell.

From Beda Fell's summit
the view across to Wether Hill..
This might not look interesting, but there is something in this picture that
you don't find
that often on an OS map?? Look center bottom....

'The Bungalow', as noted on OS maps.. can be real handy for navigation.

From the summit of Beda
looking towards Martindale and the start of my walk.
