April 28th 2007 - 10km and 545m of ascent
Holme Fell and Black Crag
All three of my Children walked with me today as we started on the first of two great walks.
The P is where we parked the car and left Odette to read her books.
Not all the places I mention are on my map above, but you will find them on the OS map.
Past Glen Mary Bridge and through what would have been a very wet area,
we approached Harry Guards Woods

This really is a pleasent walk.

Looking back down to Yew Tree Tarn.. excellent picnic spot, very peacful.
This is just below Uskdale Gap

This is Uskdale Gap.. from the top.

From the same place, looking the other way..
the most amazing view of the Langdale Pikes appears out of know where..

Looking at my map you will see that you almost double back on yourself to get to Holme Fells summit.
Well if you look on the OS map you will see another cairn more to the sout west of the true summit,
this is where Charlie is heading for.. we had hoped we would be able to see mum from the top of this one.

We could see her, but she couldn't hear us shouting her.. shucks..
the car park is 1 inch to the right of the white van on the road, above Jays head

Charlie was moving about, but the view is of Coniston water..
really have to get a new camera...

Again from the same southerly cairn looking towards the true top of Holme Fell

Kimberley has quite bad asthma and is usually always at the back,
this is her on the final part of our ascent.

Charlie is also meant to have asthma, but for some reason walking does not bring it out at all...
She is usually the one at the front... with the dogs of course..
She also has no fear of heights.. which drives me mad at times..

Finally.. all 5 of them..

Way to go Kimi for this great shot with our dodgy camera... Coniston Old Man in the far background..

Wetherlam from Holme Fells summit

Gosh, there they are again.. those Langdales..

Looking towards the disused Res.

Of course the dogs had to go in it... thats what the kids are looking at

Hodge close, and Kerenza showing that she does has a fear of heights...
If you have never been here go.. no excuses.. there is a road past High Yewdale,
make sure you get the right one, you can drive all the way up to it.

My pics don't tell the story of just how far down it is and just how sheer it is..
It's also very cool for getting echo's.. the kids loved that part..

Having crossed the A583 we headed up towards Low Arnside...
Someone hadn't packed their lunch box...

This is us, as usual where we shouldn't be..
Look on my map for Black Crag there is a straight line going across to it..
well from somewhere around the Arnside plantation (see OS map), to the summit we lost the path.

Same place, the dogs decided the blazing sun was way too hot..

Finally up onto Black Crag's summit.

Lake Windermere

Black Crag's summit. As you can see another party arrivred at exactly the same time as we did.
The other point is that this style had mega unfriendly steps for dogs..
in the end I helped both ours over the wall to the left of picture..

From the summit looking towards two lots of water.
The first is Tarn Hows, or rather just a bit of it.. and in the distance, Coniston

eee look. its them Langdales again... far right in the distance

I didn't get any pictures of Tarn Hows which is a pity because it really is beautiful...
from there we headed back to the car through the wooded area known as Lane Head Coppice.

This place was amazing.. waterfall after waterfall .. time for a plan..
We walked from here back to the car.. some 10 mins, we dropped off all our gear..
and persuaded Odette to come see the waterfalls. She really wasn't feeling so good but she agreed.

It took us over 30 minutes to get to this point.. and we stopped more times than I can tell you
but it was worth it..
We decided to take her a little further up the path.. to a totally awesome fall..

__
Mum holding onto Kimi so she dont fall over into the water..
mmmm that might have been funny... slap!.. ouch.

I've decided to make the last picture this one below because my soon to be teenage daughter
bemoans having to walk a lot of the time.. and yet I know she so loves being on top of mountains..
She has to dig deeper than any of us when its steep and I want her to know how much I love her for trying

Love ya sweety..
