Bowness car park - Great Borne - Brown How - Starling Dodd - Red Pike - Ennerdale water - Bowness car park
24th October 2007

Having camped over night at Whinfell Hall camp site where the temperature got down to at least -4 deg, I made an early start over to Ennerdale Water. I managed to get to the car park by about 6.45am, which gave me enough time to get up onto Brown How for the sun rise. In fact I wish I had started walking fourty five minutes earlier, this would have got me on top of Great Borne and then I would have had some picture to talk about.
I'm going to split the walk up into a few pages, rather a lot of pics.

Whinfell Hall camp site, not the most luxurious facilities I have to say,
but the only site around for miles, and I did have the whole place to myself...
mmm maybe the fact that it was -5 deg had something to do with that??

To the right of the picture above is a small beck.

I successfully navigated from the camp site to Ennerdale without getting lost,
and arrived at Bowness at about 7.00am. Never have been here before I had no idea the size of the car park,
it looked like it held about 20 cars at most, on getting back I'd have to say nearer to 50-60.
I think this is looking across Ennerdale to Crag Fell.. almost 100% sure.

The climb up along side Rake Beck towards Brown How.

Still very murky

Almost level with Brown How, Herdus in the far right foreground

The route up is through the gully, the view point for the following sunrise shots
is about 30 feet up from where I am here, and off to the right.

ENJOY!

If I could tell you which one of these is which.. I would... It's basically looking towards Pillar from Brown How.

From inside the gulley I talked about, looking back down onto Brown How and Bowness Knott with Crag Fell beyond.

Center picture is I think Haycock, I guess once I have walked this lot I will be able to update this...

Looking back down Rake Beck

To the right is Herdus, and looking back now I wish I had done the detour and turned left at the top of the beck,
this was my planned route. However I chose to head right, striaght towards Great Borne, maybe next time.

I dare say that in winter, when the cloud is in, it's raining and cold, this is an unforgiving place to be...
NOT TODAY IT WASN'T!
To the right of my shaddow you have Knock Murton, to the right of the trigg point you have Gavel and Blake Fell...
another set of fells I have yet to do.

My final Wainwright walk in the distance.. Whiteside, Grasmoor and Whiteless Pike with Mellbreak in between.

The way forward, Starling Dodd with Red Pike behind and High Stile in the far distance.
It was I think at this point that I knew this was going to be an awesome day. You don't always get these conditions in the lakes,
I have been lucky to have many such days, but when you do.. when the air is cold and clean,
when there is hardly a drop of wind at all.. then I don't know anywhere else in the world I would rather be.

Trig points make for excellent camera tripods.
