Loweswater - Loweswater (lake) - Holme Wood - Burnbank Fell -
Blake Fell - Gavel Fell - Hen Comb - Loweswater
13th Feb 2008

Being so close to the end of my 214 quest I really wanted to get back walking after 3 months sat at home for various reasons. Petrol prices being what they are I decided on a two day trip with the idea of doing the above walk the first day, and doing the short walk up to Fleetwith Pike the following.
I opted to stay at a camping barn, something I have never tried before and I do believe I will be using this facility again. It's not cheap compared to camping, but it does give you several advantages, depending on where you stay.. I stayed at Woodend Farm and the folks there were very helpful... I will be back...

I'll write up this walk as soon as I get some time.. pics for now..

Approaching Watergate Farm at the end of Loweswater, a more perfect day you could not have asked for.

Going through Holme Wood with a lot of work going on.

Talking of which... This tractor had taken an age to make its way up the dirt path and although
I could see it was pulling a trailer it wasn't until I got home and looked at the photos
that I realized why it had been going so slow... a very bumpy ride for sure!

Out of the woods at last and some views. This is looking towards Waterend were I stayed the night.

A close up

Looking across to Darling Fell

This is the kind of view I look for the most.. early morning. sun coming up.. just magic!

Jay was enjoying himself no end

There are probably a lot of seat in the lakes with quite wonderful views..
I wonder how many can beat this one?

The huge, massive amazing cairn.. cough.. at the summit of Burnbank Fell.

Looking across to Criffel in Scotland

Knock Murton and Cogra Moss

Blake Fells Summit

Looking out over towards Mellbreak

Gavel Fell and one very dirty dowg!

From Gavel Fell the view back to Blake Fell

The one part of the walk I was dreading, across Whiteoak Moss. As it turned out it wasn't any worse than
many other places I have been.. in fact it didn't come close to being as boggy as the area around High Tove.

Having crossed the moss this is looking back to Flouton Cop and Great Borne behind

Have to say it was so warm today.. more like summer.

From the climb up Hen Comb looking towards Buttermere, with Fleetwith Pike in the distance.

Far left is Fleetwith, nearer and to the right is High Stile and Red Pike with Starling Dodd sticking up.

Looking over to Gavel Fell from Hen Comb

Hen Comb summit, with Low Fell behind Jays head

Looking over to Mellbreak with my final walk in the background - Grasmoor

A close up of Fleetwith and Buttermere

The walk down to Little Dodd

Jay in Mosedale Beck.. ohh did he love this place!

From the same place looking up over the end of Mellbreak

After getting back to the car, I headed off to the farm and got settled into my bunk.
After having had something to eat I took Jay for his evening walk.. We went from Waterend, up Grange Lane
and up on to Askill Knott. I was going to walk up to Darling Fell but I decided I had done enough for one day.
The following photo's are of the sun setting.. rather happy to say the least.
