On July 2nd 2006

Kerenza and I climbed the following fells:

Base Brown – Green Gable – Great Gable
Brandreth – Grey Knotts

Walking 7.1 miles and ascending 3,661ft

I am going to split this report up into three pages. I took over 130 pictures and although many of them are hazy and lack real colour, I have to say that some of them are the best pictures I have taken to date... ohh sorry.. the best pictures WE have taken to date.. Kerenza took quite a few of them herself.

I want to also add that last week I did 19 miles around the Martindale horseshoe, in much the same weather conditions. My feet, back and legs hurt more today than they did after that walk. The paths, or lack of them around Great Gable make life really hard, and if I hurt today, I have no idea how Kerenza coped.. well done honey.. you did good.

Looking through the farm and across the camp site to Sour Milk Gill,
our ascent route.

The bridge over Grains Gill, you will see this again in pictures to come..

This is 7am and already it is so hot that shorts and a t-shirt seem like too much...
Not sure what was going on here, but there were 20 mini buses in the camp site
and along the road.

Looking towards Seathwaite Fell.

Base Brown looked quite daunting when you got right underneath it,
even more when you know that this isn't even the summit!

Look along the path, to the style.

It's hard to tell from this picture but the 'ladder' isn't going straight up the wall..
it goes up like a set of steps. Who ever came up with this idea.. of having the thing
do this, needs their heads testing because it is perfect for breaking a dogs legs!!

Our first close up of the falls

We had only been going 15 minutes and already we had stopped for a drink..
it was going to be a long day

There are many places I have visited in the lakes and I have thought to myself,
"when I have done these 214 hills I'm coming back here..
just to sit down and chill out.. cause this place is amazing... "
Sour Milk Gill is one of those places..

Sometimes trees can be a real pain..
Very hard to get a shot here of both Kerenza and the falls..

OK, the following are a bunch of photo's all taken from around the same place...
I just can't figure out which ones I like best.. enjoy..

Looking down on the camp site and the farm...

Trying to look brave.. wasn't actually right on the edge.. even though it looks it..

'Hey dad.. I can see our car from here...."
You can also see the bridge over Grains Gill..

3/4 of the way up Sour Milk Gill and you can see the path leading away to the right.
Had I been on my own my ascent route would have been straight up the front of Base Brown,
something I plan to do another day.

If you look to the right of Kerenza, over her shoulder,
you can just make out an almost perfect rainbow.

Now can you see it???

Sat on top of Sour Milk Gill. It's not an easy walk and climb to get to here.
There is a little bit of scrambling to do over some rocks (not really that hard),
but the views are amazing, and there are loads of places to sit and have lunch.
If anyone with kids over 7 yrs old asked me where to go for a buzzing picnic, this would now be it.

This is part of the reason I think it's so good. There are rock pools like this all the way along
the top, keep the kids happy for hours and hours.

Jay hadn't been able to get to the water at all up to this point,
the path doesn't get close enough.. he sure made up for it..

Looking across Gillercomb, this is Grey Knotts, our fifth summit of the day.

From the final ascent of Base Brown looking down Gillercomb

Bit hazy, but great view. Click the picture for a bigger one

From the ascent of Base Brown this is the path up to Green Gable.

Great End and the Scafell in the distance.

One Hundred Wainwright summits for Daddy!

From our ascent of Green Gable this is looking back to Base Brown.
