9th June 2007 - 17 miles 4717ft ascent |
I had plans to wild camp this walk and split it up into 2 days, as it turned out I managed to get a spot that I will keep to myself, somewhere around Mosedale that enabled me to camp very close to the car on the Friday night. This meant a 4.30 am wake up, and walking by 5 am, something I very rarely get the chance to do. I knew this was going to be a long one, but I was very thankful that apart from the slog up Great Calva most of it was realatively easy going. One thing I will say is this, it was bone dry under foot today after over a week of very hot weather, but it soon dawned on me that this is not an area to do when it rained a lot. |

From the start of my walk, looking down the road to Swineside.

From the same place, Bowscale Fell - Drycomb Beck is center of summits.

Looking back to Mosedale

Roundhouse, what a place this would be to live?

Looking back again towards Mosedale

This is a really amazing valley and I really get an idea as to why the Cumbria Way goes this way.
My first look at Skiddaw's Little Man

Looking across to Atkinson Pike in the far distance

You don't get to see many trees on the fells, most of them have been blown over.
This one looked so out of place, but at the same time so .. I dunno.. peaceful

Many pictues like this one today.. Lonscale Fell on the left and Skiddaw House in the valley to the right.

At last, after almost an hours walking my first ascent, Great Calva

A close up of the route up, you have to climb over the fence and walk up on the right hand side.

At the very bottom of Great Calva, marked on the map, a sheepfold.
My all time favourite AW behind.. cough.. splutter.. Mungrisdale Common

Looking back from where I came, nice of them to provide a bridge I thought..
From here you follow a very rough path north west along side the stream. After about 100 yard or so you
have to head up a clay bank, unfortunatly I was fighting so hard to get up this bank that
I forgot to take
a picture of it,
and having looked on everyone else's web sites, they must have had the same problem.

Once up this tricky part, you have to climb over the fence...

another pic of Lonscale Fell

Looking back down from where I came from.

From the slightly lower southern cairn on Great Calva's summit.

A murky close up of Skiddaw House. Once I have done my 214 I shall have to go have a look at this place up close.

Little Man

and Skiddaw's summit.

From the true northern summit

07.15 am - Great Calva across to Blencathra

Knott's summit to the left slightly, Red Gill running left to right down hill and Little Wiley Gill top to bottom.

A close up through the murky skies to Bakerstall

Having done my first summit by 7.15 am I was quite pleased, and having my GPS and map in hand I felt confident of going around my route without too many problems. I had changed my route the night before I left on the advise of someone who has walked this area a lot more than I have. It was good advise, and had the area not been one where so many of the hills looked the same I probably wouldn't have had a problem. I have my GPS attached to the shoulder strap on my rucksack, it's on a quick release catch, but it means that if I put my bag down it can end up under my bag almost, and lose satellites. |
